Not so long ago, trams were considered old fashioned. Numerous cities abandoned their tram networks in the middle of the last century – not least because of massive war damage – in favor of private transport.

But attitudes are shifting and the idea of a car-friendly city is becoming outdated in areas as many inner-cities strive to become emission-free. In these cases, the tram is celebrating a comeback and disused lines are being reactivated. However, there is concern about the unsightly overhead lines used for electrification.

VAHLE has developed high-performance charging contacts that can be embedded in the ground at the stops and thus enable charging of the vehicles at specific points. Examples of this technology are the urban trams in Luxembourg or Zaragoza. Our portfolio also includes inductive systems for continuous contactless power supply.
