On October 12th, it is national holiday “Nossa Senhora Aparecida“ in Brazil.
Since 1980 the Brazilians celebrate their saint patron of „Nossa Senhora Aparecida”. Since the Marian apparition in 1717, the city has been the most important place of pilgrimage in Brazil, if not the most important in the world. Almost eight million pilgrims come each year. Of course, there is the need of transportation and as the distances in Aparecida are enormous, there is an electric pilgrim train since this year. It takes 15 minutes and is electrified on 1,400 meters through the Aparecida´s complex by a U25 conductor system made by VAHLE.
We are happy to be part of something holy :)
Small historical excursion
In the year 1717 three fishermen made a wonderful catch in Aparecida del Norte: They fished a 36 cm tall Marian figure from the river Paraiba, which is located near the city of Guaratingueta. This laid the foundation for pilgrimages to this small parish in São Paulo. Later, on this occasion,
a basilica was consecrated to the Blessed Mother. The National Shrine of the Madonna, the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora.
Aparecida, is located about halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, right next to the highway. The huge building has room for 45,000 people and, according to the Brazilians, is supposed to be the second largest cathedral after St. Peter ‘s in Rome.
